Disco is a type of music and dance that was popular in the mid 70s through the late 1970s. Movies such as Saturday Night Fever and Thank God It's Friday made disco dance popular on a disco floor made up of lights that moved with the music while bands like the Bee Gees and KC and the Sunshine Band made the disco music popular.
The music complete with a faster than usual beat and the songs played longer than what was typical at the time. With new singers and groups like Gloria Gaynor, Herbie Mann, Donna Summer and the Village People performed songs that were thick in meaning on topics like love and dance. The songs stretched sometimes up to seventeen minutes. The dress of the disco era was very chic with the men wearing suits or at the very least polyester pants with a silky polyester shirt, while the women wore designer style dresses. Saturday Night Fever epitomized the look and the sounds of the Disco. With pulsing lights, the ever popular disco ball shining over the dance floor and the dance floors filled with women in high heels and men in platform shoes.
During the Disco years there were many one hit wonder as far as the music went. Singers like Anita Ward with her song ‘’ Ring my bell’’ and Alicia Bridges song ‘’ I love the nightlife’’. No matter what songs are mentioned when speaking of Disco the perfect example of the music is the music from the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack.
With television shows like Dancing with the Stars" Disco has been being mentioned more and more often. The stars pick these Disco songs to create their program;s around. The look is not quite back, but the music holds its own as a fun music to dance to.
