  • Hard-hitting defenseman Dion Phaneuf joined the National Hockey League as a member of the Calgary Flames in 2005, just months after being named Top Defenseman at the 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

In November of 2005, Phaneuf was voted Rookie of the Month and was ranked third of the NHL's top rookies for the year behind Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. In April of 2006, he broke the record for goals scored by a Calgary Flames' rookie defenseman and was the third defenseman in League history to score 20 goals in his rookie season. A 2007 informal poll of 141 NHL players found Dion Phanuef voted the League's hardest hitter.

In late 2007, the Flames signed Phaneuf for another six years, during which he will earn an estimated $6.5 million per year.

In early May of 2008 pictures of Phaneuf vacationing in Hawaii with actress Elisha Cuthbert confirmed that the two were romantically involved.
