  • Political Career

    Lugar started in politics after leaving the U.S. Navy, first as a member of the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners. He served two terms as the Mayor of Indianapolis in the late 1960s. He lost in his first attempt to get elected to the Senate, in 1974, but won a seat two years later, and has since been re-elected five times. He's currently a ranking member of the Committee on Foreign Relations.

    An initial champion of America's invasion of Iraq in 2003, Lugar now argues for a drawdown of American military presence in the country. In a significant speech on June 25, 2007, Lugar remarked that President Bush's strategy in Iraq is not working.
