Diaper Rash (clinically known as "diaper dermatitis") is the most common skin affliction of babies and young toddlers. It occurs as a result of a combination of diaper-related issues, such as skin remaining damp, friction from the skin sliding against the material of the diaper, and chemicals contained in excrement and urine. While infants and children of any age can be affected by diaper rash, it is generally seen most often in babies between 9 and 12 months of age. Babies who spend hours on end asleep can be most susceptible, as the diaper remains unchanged during the time that they are sleeping.http://children.webmd.com/tc/diaper-rash-topic-overview
How to Recognize Diaper Rash
The most obvious sign of diaper rash is skin that has turned red and appears to be inflamed and tender. The symptoms will be located in the area that is covered by the diaper. In addition to the physical signs of diaper rash, you may also notice a change in your young one's overall disposition. If your baby gets upset when the area is touched (such as when you are changing diapers), cries and seems generally uncomfortable, s/he may be suffering from diaper rash.http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diaper-rash/DS00069/DSECTION=symptoms

How to Treat Diaper Rash
To avoid and treat diaper rash, make an effort to keep the skin underneath the diaper as dry and clean as you can.http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diaper-rash/DS00069/DSECTION=treatments%2Dand%2Ddrugs Use a diaper with a high capacity for absorbency, and change it as soon as it is dirtied. Wash the skin with warm water only (no soaps or wipes containing alcohol), and leave the area uncovered for as long as is practical. A warm, 10-minute bath administered 3 times daily can help soothe irritated skin. If you use non-disposable diapers, add a bit of vinegar to the rinsing water.http://children.webmd.com/tc/diaper-rash-home-treatment
If the problem persists, see your doctor. S/he may recommend a hydrocortisone cream or an antifungal treatment.http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diaper-rash/DS00069/DSECTION=treatments%2Dand%2Ddrugs
