Devil May Cry Overview
- Below is in-depth information on the basics of Devil May Cry - whether you're looking for information on Red Orbs, how to use an Orb Fountain, or just want to know more about Devil Trigger, this is the section you'll want to read first. Due to it's design, there's also some information on how to save properly in Devil May Cry depending on the situation.
-
Saving Your Game
- There are two ways to save your game:
- Press Select and choose the "Save" option, which saves your current progress, i.e. your total Orbs, moves and items you've recently earned, etc. It does not, however, save the completion of the mission requirements.
- Complete the mission, and choose to save at the end. This will ensure that every task you completed in the mission are saved as being done, and you won't have to redo the same task over to continue. This is the only way to save your physical progress - if you use the first option, you'll reset any requirements you've already completed by reloading the game before finishing the mission.
- Both of these save options have their uses - you can use the first option to save your progress, and then reload to continuously build up your orbs; if you're saving just a little more to buy something from the Time Statues, this is a good option. The second option is, of course, good to keep you from having to complete the same task more than once to move forward.

Orbs
- Orbs are found all over the place in Devil May Cry - you can find various orbs from various means. Below is a list of all the orbs available, and how to acquire them.
- Red Orbs: The most common orb, obtained from defeating enemies and breaking destructible objects like crates. Red orbs are used to break the seal on some doors and to buy items and abilities for Dante from the Time Statues.
- Green Orbs: Green orbs are somewhat rare, and replenish your HP - you sometimes get these from defeated enemies, though the chance for them to drop is greater if your HP is low.
- Yellow Orbs: These orbs resurrect you if you die, allowing you to continue fighting. When you die, if you have a yellow orb in your inventory, you can use it to continue from the last door you entered. They're sometimes found in the castle, but you can always buy them from the Statues of Time...for a high price.
- Blue Orbs: These orbs are fragmented into four pieces, which are spread throughout the area of each mission. Collect the four fragments and you'll form a blue orb, which increases your HP by 10%.
- Purple Orbs: These orbs increase your Devil Trigger gauge, allowing you to stay in Devil mode for an increased length of time. They are only available from Statues of Time, and they cost a pretty penny.
-
-
Orb Fountains
- To counter-balance the high cost of certain items(the purple orbs, for example), you'll find orb fountains scattered about the landscape. They're rare, but if you can find them and hit them with the sword, they'll spew tons of red orbs. Continue hitting them until they break, and you'll be sitting pretty high on a pile of red orbs.
-
Statues of Time
- Statues of Time allow you to buy items and skills to upgrade Dante's abilities by using red orbs as currency. They appear to be demons holding hourglasses - interact with them to bring up the shop menu. These are the only way to obtain purple orbs and skills to use with your Devil Arms.
-
Devil Trigger
- The Devil Trigger allows Dante to go into Devil state, releasing his full demonic power to annihilate enemies. You activate the Devil Trigger by pressing L1 when the DT gauge is full, which enhances your speed and damage dealt. However, Devil state will only last for as long as the DT gauge(the runes) are there - when it runs out, you'll have to refill it by landing successful attacks and taking damage - preferably by landing the attacks more often.

Devil May Cry Walkthrough
- Now, let's delve into the game itself. This walkthrough is divided into missions, with each mission broken into step-by-step instructions on completing the requirements that complete the mission objective. If you need information on weapons and abilities, refer to their respective sections after the walkthrough. This walkthrough assumes that you are on your first play through at normal difficulty.
-
Introduction
- CUTSCENE: Dante relaxes in his office until a mysterious woman bursts through the door on a motorbike - the two duel, after which the woman informs Dante that she wishes to hire him, also revealing her name to be Trish. Apparently the Dark Lord will soon attempt to open a gate from the demon world on Mallet Island, so the two head out, and Trish leaves Dante behind.
- Once you gain control of Dante, head up the path and check the side path to find a yellow orb. Keep moving, and when you reach the overpass, use a kick jump to reach it. Run under the pavilion and collect the blue orb fragment, then head towards the castle to begin your first mission.

Mission 1: Curse of the Bloody Puppets
- The requirements to complete this mission are:
- Collect the Red Orbs
- Find the Rusty Key
- Activate the Elevator via the Dial
- Kill all the Marionettes to Open the Door

-
Collect the Red Orbs
- After you enter the castle, the entrance will be sealed - there's no exiting, so let's take a look around and see if we can find anything, shall we?
- There are three floors in this area - a Statue of Time is on the second floor, and some orbs on the third floor. If you look around, you'll notice red orbs - you need to collect them.
- Take the stairs on the right(the ones on the left are decimated), and use a kick jump on the balcony to reach the red orbs there. head back down to the ground floor, and look upwards to see another blue orb fragment - use a kick jump to reach it.
- The Statue of Time is currently inoperable, so don't bother with it yet. Keep collecting the red orbs - check the third floor and destroy all the destructible objects for red orbs until you collect 45; when that happens, head to the red door to destroy the seal and continue.
-
Find the Rusty Key
- Hit the suits of armor to find more red orbs and a third blue orb fragment. There's a door that leads to the catacombs. Head to the back where the staircase is and through the archway to a room with a Marionette - don't worry, it won't attack for now. To the left, there's a puzzle, but you aren't equipped for it yet.
- Look in the pool of water on the left to find a blue orb fragment to complete a blue orb and increase your health. Climb onto the bronze piece and kick jump to the upper platform.
- Check the Marionette to find the Rusty Key. Before you can make off with it, the Marionette will attack, and another drops from above to aid it. Take them out, and kill the one from below when you drop down as well before you head back to the main hall.
- Use the Rusty Key to unlock the blue door.
-
Activate the Elevator via the Dial
- When you enter the next room, more Marionettes are hanging above you - they won't attack for now, so don't worry. There are wooden doors that won't open right now until they're defeated.
- A blue orb fragment sits on the left wing of the plane; to get to it, kick jump off the pillar by the door and position Dante to land on the propeller to cause a cascade of red orbs to drop from above. Collect them and continue.
- In the far corner is an alcove with a two suits of armor near a combination crest - to get it to light up, hit it repeatedly with your Devil Arm(sword), and it'll activate the pillar and take you to the basement level.
- You'll be in an underground arena area - Marionettes will drop down and attack, so defeat them with combos and collect any red orbs that drop. When you defeat all of them, the gates will open and more Marionettes will flow in to attack - kill them off.
-
Mission 2: Judge of Death
- The requirements to complete this mission are:
- Wield Alastor
- Find the Rusty Key
- Obtain the Staff of Judgment
- Give the Staff to the Judge of Death
- YouTube: Devil May Cry Mission 2 (Time: 9:55)
-
Weild Alastor
- When you enter the long hallway, across from the entrance is a room with a Statue of Time and a blue orb fragment - stock up on supplies if you need them and grab the fragment by smashing the tables near the Statue of Time.
- Break everything you can to collect red orbs, and head down the long hallway, defeating any of the cannon fodder enemies you find.
- At the top of the staircase is a statue with a sword in its chest - this sword is Alastor. Watch the cutscene, then take a moment to familiarize yourself with the new weapon. You can purchase new abilities for it from the Statue of Time.
- Whenever you leave the study, Marionettes appear - you can use these respawning enemies to build up some red orbs for early abilities.
-
Find the Rusty Key
- Enter the library, and smash the furniture for more red orbs. On the second floor you'll find the shotgun, and you can equip if you want.
- Read through the books to learn more about the Castellans if you want, then find the painting of the Grim Reaper and examine it to find the Rusty Key.
-
Obtain the Staff of Judgment
- Head through the previously locked door using the Rusty Key to enter the courtyard, and defeat the swarms of enemies that appear from the portals. When you get tired of killing them, head up to the second floor and move to the door at the end of the path.
- You'll be greeted by Marionettes on the other side of the door, so be ready - the seal on the door will attempt to grab you if you get too close, so don't get backed against it. The shotgun is useful in these tight spaces.
- Read the plaque on the statue and strike the altar with Alastor until stops sliding, which reveals a secret entrance set in the ground.
- Hop into the entrance, and grab the Staff of Judgment from the Judge of Death statue here. A column will rotate to reveal an opening - climb in, and ride it back to the library.
- Trying the door reveals that it's sealed, and you'll hear laughter - a Sin Scissor will appear from the Grim Reaper painting, and two more will join up with it. Use the shotgun to pick them off, and avoid their attacks - they deal moderate damage. When they're dead, the seal on the door will be broken, letting you enter the next room.
-
Give the Staff to the Judge of Death
- You can step on the harmless bugs here for easy red orbs if you're really desperate for them - just run over them with Dante to get the orbs. Examine the Judge of Death statue here - looks familiar, doesn't it?
- Place the Staff of Judgment in this statues hands and the door to the cathedral opens, completing the mission.
