History
French officer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Detroit in 1701. It was first called "Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit," but during the French and Indian War in 1760, the name was shortened to Detroit. Detroit was the capital of Michigan from 1805 to 1847. Henry Ford built the first automobile in 1896, and in 1904 started the Ford Motor Company.

Detroit is home to four major league sports teams. NHL's Detroit Red Wings play at Joe Louis Arena and won the Stanley Cup 10 times since 1935.
NBA"s Detroit Pistons play at the Palace of Auburn Hills and won the championship five times since 1944.
NFL's Detroit Lions play at Ford Field in Detroit. They have won four pre-Super Bowl NFL Championships.
MLB's Detroit Tigers play at Comerica Park and won the World Series title four times since 1935.
