Detroit Tigers Draft

The first Major League Baseball draft took place in 1965. The very first player drafted was Rick Monday out of Arizona State by the Oakland Athletics. The Detroit Tigers drafting 13th selected catcher Gene Lamont out of Hiawatha HS, Kirkland, Illinois. Some of the better known players selected in the first round of the 1965 draft were Bernie Carbo, John Wyatt, Ray Fosse, Billy Conigliaro and Joe Coleman. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/draft/draft.jsp

Through the years, the Tiger organization had quite a few recognizable first round selections, but very few of them made an impact on the big league club. Lance Parish, and Kirk Gibson were stars on their 1984 World Series team, while Travis Fryman and Tony Clark were to have very productive careers. The team drafted heavily in the pitching department and was rewarded with quite a few career shortened pitching injuries. From 1994 through 1998 their first round selections were all hard throwing pitchers. Only Jeff Weaver was able to pitch for the most part injury free. Matt Anderson and his 100 mph fastball, Cade Gaspar, Mike Drumright]] and Seth Greisinger were all beset by injuries as were 2000 and 2001 draft choices Matt Wheatland and Kenny Baugh.

In more recent years the Tigers have seen their selections rise rapidly to the Major League level. Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello and Ryan Perry were all drafted between 2004 and 2008 and are mainstays of the Tiger's staff. Outifelder Cameron Maybin traded to the Florida Marlins in the deal that brought All Star Miguel Cabrera to Detroit starts for Florida. Brennan Boesch was named Rookie of the Month in May of 2010 and looks to be a future star. Since GM Dave Dombrowski took over the team, the draft has been a success and the Tiger's minor league system has developed into one of the best in all of baseball.

Future stars such as Ryan Streiby, Casper Wells, Andrew Oliver, Jacob Turner and Daniel Fields are honing their skills and waiting their turns to be summoned to Detroit. [[Charles Furbush who has 90 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched for the Lakeland Tigers is back after missing all of 2008 with an elbow sprain and looks to be ready to advance rapidly through the system.
