The Detroit Shock are a women's professional basketball team. They compete in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA. Since their founding in 1998, they have won the WNBA Championship three times, including in 2008.
On June 15, 2009, head coach Bill Laimbeer resigned, stating he wishes to pursue a coaching job in the National Basketball Association. Assistant coach Rick Mahorn was named as his replacement.http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/news/story?id=4260271
Early History
The franchise was originally granted to the city of Detroit in 1998. The Shock joined the league as part of the first WNBA expansion with the Washington Mystics. They failed to make the playoffs their first season, but did in 1999, losing in the second round.
