In the first round of the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the #1 seeded Detroit Red Wings will face-off against the #8 seeded Nashville Predators in a Western Conference quarterfinal series. This page will provide information about this playoff series. The Red Wings not only won the Central Division championship, but also finished with the best record in the 2007-08 regular season. This not only guarantees them home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, but also allows the Red Wings to be awarded with the President's Trophy. The Red Wings have won the Stanley Cup 10 times. Only Montreal and Toronto have won more in hockey history, but unlike their neighbors north of the border, the Wings have had recent championship success. Detroit won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998, and then won another Stanley Cup championship in 2002. While the Red Wings are one of the original six teams, the Predators are a relatively new franchise, gaining expansion in 1998. This is the fourth consecutive season that the Preds have qualified for post-season play. However, Nashville is looking for its first ever playoff series victory, having lost to the Red Wings in 2004, and the San Jose Sharks in each of the last two playoff seasons.
