Desmond Hume is a character on ABC’s Lost and is played by Henry Ian Cusick. Desmond was not a Ocean Flight 815 crash survivor, but he was stranded on the Island as a result of Shipwreck.

Before the Island

Desmond's life was one failure after another, he was fired from being a Monk, ruined his relationship with the woman he loved Penny Widmore, was kicked out of the Royal Scots Regiment and was loathed by Penny’s father Charles Widmore. Charles gave Desmond an opportunity to get his honor back by entering a race to sail around the world. But during the race something went wrong and he ended up crashing on the Island.

On the Island

A man named Kelvin found Desmond and he helped Kelvin push the button in the Swan station for three years. After Desmond learned that Kelvin had secretly fixed Desmond’s sailboat and was planning to escape on it, Desmond confronted him and accidentally slammed his head on a rock killing him. He hurried back to the Swan pushing the button a bit too late, which caused to crash of Oceanic Flight 815. For 44 days Desmond was completely alone in the hatch until Jack, Locke and Kate found him after they opened the hatch up. Desmond decided to join the camp of survivors. When Locke decided not to push the button, Desmond turned the fail-safe key which discharged the energy, revealed the Island to the outside world, and caused the Swan to implode utterly destroying it. After that Desmond gained a strange ability to see flashes of the future, in certain flashes he would see Charlie's death and prevented it many times. He also saw in a flash a woman parachuting on the Island and saying that Penny sent her and that her boat was close by, all of which came true. Desmond and Sayid went to the boat and Desmond began having flashes of the past which he could control. He traveled back to 1996 and got Penny’s phone number, using that number he called her in the present and had an emotional conversation with her. Desmond and the Oceanic Six left the boat on a helicopter an were eventually rescued by Penny.

After the Rescue

Penny and Desmond hid from her father and had a son named Charlie while living on a boat. One day Desmond remembered he needed to tell Daniel Faraday’s mother, Eloise Hawking, to help those left behind on the island. After he found Eloise, she tried to convince Desmond to go back to the Island, saying that the Island was not done with him, but Desmond would not budge. Shortly after, Benjamin Linus, in an effort to kill Penny, shot Desmond but he threw Ben into the water when he realized Ben meant to hurt Penny.
