Professional hockey player Derian Hatcher most recently played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League. A hard-hitting, physical defenseman, Hatcher became the first American-born captain to win the Stanley Cup, leading the Dallas Stars to their 1999 win.
In October of 2008, Hatcher was sidelined with a potentially career-ending knee injury. He underwent knee-replacement surgery, then retired from the league on June 15, 2009. Hatcher will remain with the Flyers as a player development coach.http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4260478
NHL Career
Drafted 12th overall by the Minnesota North Stars during the first round of the 1990 NHL entry draft, Hatcher made his NHL debut during the 1991-1992 season. He played 41 games and was named the North Stars' rookie of the year. He moved to Dallas along with his team in 1993 and was named their top defenseman for the 1993-1994 season, during which he racked up a career high of 211 penalty minutes.
After 13 years with the Stars, Hatcher was a free agent and signed with the Detroit Red Wings during the summer of 2003. He missed the majority of the 2003-2004 season due to a recurring knee injury, then played minor hockey during the NHL's locked-out 2004-2005 season.
Due to the new salary cap rules, Detroit chose to buy out the remainder of Hatcher's contract and he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2005 off-season.
