Derek Fisher

  • Derek Fisher is a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association, and is currently a point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.

    In 2009, he helped the Los Angeles Lakers won their 15th NBA Championship. This is his fourth championship with the Lakers. Despite having an ordinary playoffs stats, Fisher was the key in Game 4 during NBA Finals. His three pointers were turning point for the Los Angeles Lakers to win the series. LA Times: [1]

    LA Times reports that despite his age, he is ready to play beyond 2009-10 NBA season.He also indicates that he would like to retire as a Laker. LA Times: [2]

    On NBA replacement referees, he felt that the quality of the games will be better with the experienced officials instead of one who tries to figure out the game. It is not personal but one decided game could make a huge difference during playoffs in getting home court advantage. LA Times: [3]

  • Early Life

    Derek Lamar Fisher was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School where he developed his basketball skills. He later went on to attend the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where he developed into an NBA caliber point guard.
  • Pro Career

    Fisher was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. In Los Angeles, he first served as a back-up to point guard Nick Van Exel, then later became the starting point guard during the Lakers Championship runs in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He signed with the Utah Jazz in 2004. In 2007, with his 10 month old daughter in need of specialized treatment in a major city with a medical center that specialized in retinoblastoma, he was released from his contract with the Utah Jazz. He quickly returned the Los Angeles Lakers and is now currently the starting point guard for the team.
