Derek Fisher

  • Derek Lamar Fisher is a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association, and is currently a point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. Fisher was selected as the 24th pick of the 1996 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Initially, his role was to backup Nic Van Exel, the point guard for the Lakers at the time. During his rookie season, he played 80 games (three as a starter). In 1999-2000 season, he helped the Lakers to their first NBA title since 1998 and the next two consecutive championships.


    He has played full season (82 games) for large number of occasions. They are 1998, 2003, 2004 (with the Los Angeles Lakers); 2005 (with the Golden State Warriors); 2007 (with the Utah Jazz); 2008 and 2009 (with the Los Angeles Lakers).


    In 2009, he helped the Los Angeles Lakers won their 15th NBA Championship. This is his fourth championship with the Lakers. Despite having an ordinary playoffs stats, Fisher was the key in Game 4 during NBA Finals. His three pointers were turning point for the Los Angeles Lakers to win the series. LA Times: [1]

  • Early Life

    Derek Fisher was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School where he developed his basketball skills. He later went on to attend the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where he developed into an NBA caliber point guard.
  • Pro Career

    After spending eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, Derek Fisher signed as a free agent on July 16, 2004 with the Golden State Warriors where he played 156 games.


    On July 12, 2006, he was traded to the Utah Jazz for Devin Brown, Keith McLeod and Andre Owens. Due to his 10 month old daughter in need of specialized treatment in a major city with a medical center that specialized in retinoblastoma, he was released from his contract with the Utah Jazz on July 2, 2007. He signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers on July 20, 2007. [1]
