  • Derek Armstrong is a professional ice hockey player for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.
  • Early Career

    Prior to his NHL days, Armstrong played for the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League, starting in 1990. He was drafted by the New York Islanders 128th overall in the 1992 NHL Draft. He spent his first couple years with the Islanders' American Hockey League and International Hockey League affiliates, playing one game in the NHL in 1993. On July 28, 1997, Armstrong signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators. He played just nine NHL games before he was released and signed with the New York Rangers on August 10, 1998. The Rangers sent Armstrong to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack for the majority of the next three seasons. He earned several honors in the AHL including the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy for the Calder Cup Playoff MVP and the Les Cunningham Award for the AHL MVP.
  • Recent Years

    Armstrong left the United States to play one season in Switzerland in 2001. He returned to the U.S. and was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on July 16, 2002. Armstrong has continued with the Kings in the years since, signing a two year, $3 million contract extension in 2007.
