The Denver Nuggets play in the Northwest Division of the NBA's Western Conference. The Denver Nuggets were originally founded in 1967 as the Denver Rockets of the American Basketball Association. When the franchise joined the NBA, the name was changed to Nuggets, since the Houston Rockets already existed in the NBA. The Nuggets were one of four teams to move to the NBA. The others were the New York Nets, San Antonio Spurs, and Indiana Pacers. In the 2010 playoffs, the Nuggets matched up with their division rivals, the Utah Jazz. Despite having home court advantage in the series, the Nuggets would lose the series to Utah, four games to two.http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/DEN/2010_games.html

Denver got off to a good start in their first years in th NBA during the 1976-77 and 1977-78 season. In both years, they won the Midwest Division title. During the 1978 playoffs, the Nuggets also advanced all the way to the Western Conference Finals, but they would lose to the Seattle SuperSonics.

After making the playoffs their first three seasons in the NBA, the Nuggets cooled off until 1981-82, when they would begin a streak of nine straight years of making the postseason. This stretch included a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1985. Denver would not return to the conference finals again until 2009, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.
