Dennis Haysbert was born in San Mateo, California. His mother was a homemaker, and his father was a deputy sheriff.

Hasybert was offered athletic scholarships after college, but he decided to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to pursue acting.

His first big movie role came in Major League, but he really got audience recognition years later for his role on the hit TV show 24 as president David Palmer. He currently stars as Jonas Blane on the TV show The Unit.
