The Dell Streak is a mobile Internet device which can be considered as either a small tablet computer or a large smartphone. It has a high-resolution 5” touchscreen and runs the Android operating system.
The Streak can connect to the Internet using wi-fi or via a 3G phone network, and also has Bluetooth for short-range wireless connections to devices such as headsets, keyboards and nearby computers.
The 5” touchscreen is made of Gorilla Glass, which makes it extremely robust, and has 800 x 480 pixels making the Streak capable of showing many web pages full width on screen, and allowing for good display of widescreen video.
The Streak is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, one of the fastest currently used in mobile devices.
There are forward and backward facing cameras, which can be used for video-conferencing and for taking still photographs or recording video.
The device is especially geared towards the use of social networking sites, and provides easy access to Facebook and Twitter, and easy video uploading to YouTube. As it uses the Android operating system it also comes with a full web browser and the ability to download and run applications from the Android Marketplace.
The Dell Streak is currently offered with 2GB of memory built-in plus a bundled 16GB memory card.
Buying Guide
The Dell Streak is currently on sale in the United Kingdom, and is available from O2 and Carphone Warehouse. It will also be sold directly by Dell in the future.
Carphone Warehouse offers a selection of pay monthly contracts for phone services, and also offer the device for use on a pay-as-you-go tariff, and without any plan.
The Dell Streak can be bought from O2 on a pay-as-you-go basis for £399. If buying with a monthly phone plan, the device costs £149 with a £30pm plan on an 18 month contract, but is free on contracts for £40pm or more.http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/Dell/Streak_16GB_PayG?lastPage=/mobile_phones/Pay_And_Go/page http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs
Carphone Warehouse’s prices are broadly similar, but buying the device as “handset only”, i.e. without a plan, costs slightly more at £429.
Dell will launch the Streak in the US later in the summer, mostly likely in July. Prices for an unlocked Dell Streak are expected to be around $500.http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/dell-streak-500-unlocked-in-us-available-next-month/
The Streak should become available in more countries and though more channels later in the year.
