A defensive driving course is designed to make drivers more aware of their surroundings, and train them in how to react to situations that may arise while operating a motor vehicle. The courses are short but full of information and expose students to a number of scenarios they may face on the road. Defensive driving courses are often taken by those wanting a discount on their auto insurance or by those wanting to reduce or dismiss a traffic ticket.
Much of what is taught in a defensive driving course is common sense, such as not following too closely behind the vehicle in front. There are certain rules outlined in each course, that when followed and internalized through use, can make the driver more prepared for the unexpected events that do occur during driving.
There are online defensive driving courses, as well as the traditional classroom setting. Many of the online courses are accepted for traffic ticket dismissal.
