Backstory
The backstory to Dead Space has been detailed in a six-issue comic book series by the same name and will also make up the contents of the upcoming animated film, Dead Space: Downfall. The comics outline the discovery of a strange artifiact by a mining team assigned to a distant planet. This discovery leads to a series of unusual occurrences aboard the team's vessel, eventually leading to their loss of contact with Earth. The game picks up at this point, with the player assuming the role of an engineer who must investigate what's gone wrong.Wikipedia: Dead SpaceDead Space takes place hundreds of years in the future, when mankind has spread through space to colonize other planets. In order to gather the natural resources needed to maintain all these settlements, humanity has taken to strip-mining entire planets with the use of huge mining ships. The game takes place as the USG Ishimura, the largest and oldest of these mining ships, has become damaged and contact with the ship has been lost. The Ishimura has just "popped the cork" on the planet Aegis VII, meaning it has begun mining operations on the planet.
You take the role of Isaac Clark, an engineer from another ship that has been dispatched with a security team to repair the Ishimura's communications array. Isaac is also romantically involved with Nicole, a medical officer aboard the Ishimura. Isaac received a strange, unsettling message from Nicole before heading out to assist the Ishimura.

Dead Space Walkthrough Introduction
This is the full-text walkthrough for the 2008 Xbox 360 third-person survival horror game, Dead Space. In this guide you'll find detailed instructions to complete every chapter and every objective in the game, as well as learn how to defeat the game's bosses. This guide also includes tips for unlocking all 48 of the games Achievements. -
-
-
Basics
- You can move Isaac around at a walking pace with the Left Analog Stick. Control where Isaac looks with the Right Analog Stick.
- You can also run by holding the Left Bumper. This allows to move more quickly and in any direction he can move while walking. This means that the player can run sideways or backward, which is extremely helpful.
- There are various items throughout the Ishimura that Isaac can pick up and take with him to use later. These include different kinds of ammunition for weapons and health items to restore his energy.
-
Health, Energy and Ammo
- Dead Space doesn't utilize the usual heads-up display most shooters employ. This would normally display the player's current health level, ammunition supply, current weapon and other information.
- In Dead Space, all those displays are concentrated in different areas. Isaac's health is displayed in a glowing meter that runs down the spine of his RIG, or spacesuit.
- The RIG also displays Isaac's current Stasis energy in a round display on his shoulder.
- Ammunition is displayed in a hologram above each weapon. You can see your ammo counter by pressing the Left Trigger to ready the weapon.
-
-
Zero-G
- Occasionally, Isaac will be faced with an area of the Ishimura that is without gravity. During these times, Isaac can move as he normally would, though he will be slower and more deliberate because he is actually being magnetically attached to the ship by his suit.
- In Zero-G, you also have the ability to walk on walls and ceilings with no respect for the directions of up and down. During these times, the game camera will orient itself to your position, so you'll still feel like you're on the floor, even though the room around you is upside-down.
- Zero-G Jump: The one benefits of Zero-G is that it allows Isaac to hurl himself through the environment in a straight line from one point to another. For example, Isaac could jump from the floor to the ceiling of one room, land on the ceiling, and then run as if he was still on the floor. Executing a Zero-G jump has to do with the surface you're jumping to: If that surface is incompatible for some reason, or is too close or at a dangerous angle, you won't be able to jump to it.
- Execute a Zero-G jump by holding the Left Trigger to aim at a surface, then press Y. If you can't jump to the other surface for some reason, the ammo counter on the weapon you're holding will blink red.
-
Fighting
- Melee attack: Pulling the Right Trigger with any weapon will cause Isaac to perform a melee attack. He'll swing the object he's holding in a wide arc. Especially in higher difficulties, the melee attack is useful only as a last-ditch effort.
- Stomping: Press the Right Bumper to cause Isaac to stomp down hard on anything in front of him. This is useful to break open containers for items and also to break the limbs off enemies that are on the ground. Don't get too comfortable using it, however, because most enemies take numerous stomps to kill and will retaliate in the mean time.
- Firing a Weapon: Raise any weapon you're carrying by holding the Left Trigger, which will bring up the weapon's on-board laser sights and holographic ammo counter. You can't fire a weapon without aiming it first. Fire the weapon with the Right Trigger.
- Reloading: You can reload a weapon when aiming it. Press A while holding the Left Trigger.
- Aiming: Aiming a weapon slows your movement slightly in order to keep the weapon steady, but it also activates your suit flashlight, which has an unlimited battery and which always is pointed where you're aiming. Aiming is also necessary to execute a Zero-G Jump and to use Isaac's two other abilities, Stasis and Kinesis.
-
Enemies
- Dead Space's enemies are referred to as Necromorphs. They are generally large and gross, with multiple large limbs that stretch out in different directions. Usually, these limbs are used for impaling.
- Necromorphs are, by definition, already dead in some respect. Therefore, like zombies, they're hard to kill. Shooting a necromorph in the gut or chest area usually has little effect. It will stagger most small necromorphs, but larger ones will ignore this sort of attack completely.
- The focus of the game is to try to cut off enemies limbs, including their heads. Most enemies require you to sever at least two limbs to bring them down.
- Enemies missing limbs will almost always still come after you until they are dead. Often removing a certain limb is key to killing an enemy, and removing certain limbs will cause them to behave differently. For example, a standard necromorph, the first kind you encounter, will move more quickly and erratically, but more aimlessly if you sever its head.
-
Stasis
- This is an ability you gain at some point during the story, but not one you start with. Whether you can utilize Stasis depends on your store of Stasis energy, which is expended every time you use the ability. You can recharge your Stasis energy and recharging stations throughout the ship, or by using a Stasis Pack from your inventory.
- Activate Stasis by holding the Left Trigger to aim at an object or enemy, then press X to fire the ability.
- Stasis works by radically slowing down the movements of almost anything hit by it. It can be used to slow malfunctioning doors or machinery so that the player can get past them, and also enemies, to slow them down and make them more vulnerable to fire.
- You can also use Stasis to slow enemies and let you make a run for it.
-
Kinesis
- Another ability you learn in the field, Kinesis allows you to pick up and throw objects. These include enemy limbs, which can be used as weapons.
- Activate Kinesis by aiming at an object with the Left Trigger, then press B to draw the object to you.
- You can then release the object by releasing the Left Trigger, or launch it at high speed with the Right Trigger.
- You can use Kinesis to throw switches and manipulate other objects in order to unlock doors and activate ship systems.
- Kinesis is also useful in battle. Throughout the ship are scattered explosive orange canisters that can be flung into enemies. Isaac can also pick up bits of machinery like fan blades, as well as severed enemies limbs, and fire them back at enemies as well.
-
Upgrading Equipment
- Dead Space allows you to upgrade all your equipment, including your Stasis capabilities, Kinesis capabilities, RIG and weapons.
- Upgraded RIGs can be purchased from various Store locations scattered throughout the ship.
- You can also purchase or find Power Nodes. These items can be installed into your weapons or armor to give them upgraded properties, such as increased damage, increased health, etc.
- Power Nodes are installed at Work Benches, which are also found scattered around the ship.
- Nodes can also be used to unlock some doors, which almost always have a great deal of other power-ups inside.
- You can upgrade a great deal of your equipment, but you won't be able to fully upgrade all your equipment on your first time through the game.
- New equipment, including new RIGs, become available when you find a Schematic. These are items scattered throughout the ship. When you find a Schematic, return it to a Store and a new weapon or item will become available for sale.
-
Second Playthrough
- Finishing Dead Space allows you to play the game through again, but with your upgraded equipment.
- Playing through again forces you to play on the same difficulty setting. However, you can use your Second Playthrough to unlock various achievements, including those concerning upgrading your equipment.
