Chapter One: New Arrivals
- YouTube: Mahalo Games: Dead Space - Mission 1
- You start the game in your shuttle. Turn around and head down the hallway toward the exit, on the right.
- TIP: Hang a left instead and go into one of the crew areas. On the right side of the room is a Small Medpack.
- Now head out of the ship and follow the security team. The game will teach you to run, along with other basic maneuvers as you progress onward.
- Just outside your ship, you'll be prompted to open a door.
- TIP: Look left of this door when you go through to see a series of cubby holes. Check them for a small medpack.
- Next you'll get a prompt that teaches you about the Locator System. Press the directed button to get a guide line that shows you the way to your next objective.
- Follow the line through a door in the center of the room at the back wall. Go through to find a computer screen you can interact with.
- Activating the screen also triggers a handful of other events, including an attack by some strange-looking enemies called Necromorphs. You'll need to escape, since you're still weaponless.
- Go through the door behind the computer screen. Run and follow the hall.
- You'll soon come to an elevator. Open it, then hit the activation button just inside on the same wall as the door to escape.
- At the bottom of the elevator, head left to receive your first weapon - the Taser-like Plasma Cutter. Use it by holding down the Left Trigger to aim and firing the cutter with the Right Trigger.
- Take the cutter to the sparking plasma conduit near the door to the right. Use the cutter on the conduit to short it out, then open the door.
- An enemy drops in. Use the cutter to sever its limbs to kill it.
- TIP: Check the dead monster to receive some plasma ammo for your cutter.
- Go through the door and follow the hallway. You'll soon come to a fork. Head to the left to find some credits.
- ACHIEVEMENT/TROPHY ALERT! Continue down the hall and you'll pick up a med pack and, before long, an Audio Log. Collecting these goes toward the Story Teller and Legend Teller achievements/trophies.
- TIP: For a survival horror game, items abound in this stage. Look for panels on walls with glowing lights on them to find Power Nodes, and panels marked with a C for lockers filled with items. You can also stomp on some things for items, like those crates with the green lights on top. Keep an eye out.
- Open the next door and you'll enter the tram station. You'll receive a new objective shortly afterward.
- TIP: On the wall opposite the big window is a Save Station.
- When you're done here, go to the door at the other end of the room to continue.
- On the other side of this door is a hallway. Take the fork to the right and go through the door.
- Continue down to the large room with the tram rail above. Head right toward the malfunctioning door. In front of the door is a Stasis Module. Pick it up and you'll get a quick tutorial on using Stasis.
- Slow down the door (and enemies) for a short time by aiming and firing as directed.
- Once you've zapped the door, slip through and continue up the ramp. At the top is a save station.
- Save, then take the fork to the left. The door to your far left is the only one that's currently operational.
- Through the door you'll enter a room with a tram car and two electronic arms. You can activate the first from the console just ahead.
- Node! Look behind you on the wall for a green square that's blinking. Activate it to find a Power Node, which can be used to upgrade your weapons.
- Now go right and take the ramp up and over. You'll be ambushed by one of those enemies. Kill it to continue.
- Audio Log! Go all the way to the left on the other side of the room, near the two bodies, to find an audio log.
- Activate the second panel to send out the second loader arm. When the arm goes forward, hit it with Stasis. Then head to the top of the ramp and activate the third panel.
- TIP: If you open the C panel on the wall here, you'll get 1,500 credits, followed by an attacker who comes at you through the wall. Kill it and you'll get a few more credits for the effort. If you choose to do it, open the C panel before you activate the third panel.
- That removes the damaged tram car. Head back toward the door and you'll be attacked again.
- TIP: You can slow down enemies with Stasis, making them easier to cut apart. It's a good strategy to conserve ammo. Don't go crazy, however, as Stasis energy needs to be conserved also.
- Backtrack to the save point. While you're here, head down to the locked door ahead to find 3,000 credits.
- TIP: Also in that hallway is the slightly hidden offshoot door to the left that leads into a bathroom. Check it thoroughly to find some meds and some ammo for your plasma cutter.
- Now go back down the ramp near the save point to return to the maintenance bay. You'll have to use Stasis on the door to get back through.
- Quickly fill your Stasis meter at the Stasis recharge station just to the side of the door. Head back the large room and two enemies will appear - one tall one in the vein of what you've seen before, and one that crawls along the ground.
- TIP: Use Stasis freely on these two to help you. You can recharge at the station when the fight's over with. Slow down both and cut them apart.
- Recharge your Stasis when the battle's over and then go to the far end of the room to exit.
- Follow the hallway back up and you'll be told the door ahead is open. Continue to follow the hallway, rather than take the door back to the tram station on the left. This is the first fork you came to in this area.
- Continuing beyond the tram station leads you to a save point and an ambush. Kill the enemy and follow the hallway.
- Audio Log! Along the way to the newly opened door down this hallway is a log that instructs you, again, to dismember your enemies.
- You'll reach the elevator to the maintenance bay. Make sure you're set before you go down, as you'll have your work cut out for you at the bottom.
- There's something like six enemies in this room, and they'll gang up on you if you let them. The best strategy is to charge the nearest, Stasis and kill it quickly, then look for the next. Quickly isolating and killing each enemy one at a time is about the best way to avoid getting killed.
- TIP: As soon as you take down an enemy, check for ammo on the ground. You'll need it.
- One or two of the enemies in this room maraud around, and some of the others jump from below you to ambush you. The first will do this straight ahead of you. That's your first target.
- Stasis and dismember that enemy as fast as you can, because coming up behind/on the left of you is a second baddie. Deal with it as fast as you can.
- Now continue along the catwalk the way you were headed to fight the first enemy. Do not go to the right, unless you prefer taking a gang beating to having some kind of advantage in this battle.
- You should see another one or two enemies out ahead as you approach the ramp to the lower area of the room. If you can get them together, you can Stasis both at the same time.
- TIP: The little red tanks on the ground; yes, you guessed it, they explode when fired upon. Use them liberally.
- TIP: Your melee attack, which is executed by pulling the Right Trigger without aiming, should not be relied upon. The attack is fairly ineffective and often doesn't connect at all because your enemies will block. All in all, it is your last-ditch, last-hope attack, and should only be used when running away or sprinting to a better position to open fire again isn't an option.
- No matter what, sooner or later some or all of the enemies will be left to attack you. Stasis them as you can and just keep fighting.
- Try to bottle neck them and fight them one at a time, and try to remember where the corners are along the catwalk so you can continue to back up and keep ground and railings between you and the enemies. With some effort (or multiple attempts), you should prevail.
- When the room is clear, gather up the ammo that's left and use your guide arrow (Click in the Right Stick) to find the unlocked door in the lower area of the room. Go through into an elevator that takes you up to Crane Control.
- At the top of the elevator, hang a left and go to the panel on the wall to receive some ammo. You'll need it.
- In front of you down the walkway is a body. As you approach it, it'll attack you. Get ready and blast it.
- Now proceed to the end of the walkway to find some more ammo and the maintenance bay key. You'll have to fight to get to them, though.
- Before picking up the maintenance bay key, grab the text file to the left of it.
- Turn around and prepare to deal with another attacker. Kill it and return to the elevator.
- Get your gun ready because you'll be rushed as soon as the elevator doors open. This is a good time to use Stasis if you have some.
- Now go up the ramp to your right to the storage room. Use your key to open the door.
- Node! Directly ahead is a small panel with a blue light. Open it for a Power node. There also is a med kit in the locker to the right.
- Grab the data board off the desk. Now turn to your right and go to the bench. Hit A to access the bench and upgrade your equipment.
- As you leave, you'll receive a transmission. Note the enemy climbing up onto the catwalk just ahead. There's another one around as well.
- Kill them as fast as you can. Try to get to a position where both are on the same side of you, then pick your shots. When they're down, head to the door you entered through.
- The body lying in front of you at the door isn't a body. Get ready to take it on when you approach.
- With the enemies dead, head through the door back into the cargo lift. Get ready for another ambush at the top.
- Head to the save point. Then follow the hall back to the Tram Control Room.
- Install the data board at the far end of the room, then activate the control panel near the big window. You'll get a new objective - return to your ship.
- Go to the far door near the data board installation terminal. It's the way you came in when you first entered the tram area. Follow the hallway.
- Return to the elevator that brought you down here and take it back up. You'll be released into another hallway.
- Ahead is an enemy that runs when you see it. It'll dive into the air vent ahead.
- Quickly run forward and engage the other monster just around the corner. Kill it as fast as you can, then turn around because the first monster you saw is coming out of the air shaft behind you. Take it down.
- Continue on your way into the Flight Lounge. Stop by the save point here, then continue into the docking bay.
- Another of those crawling monsters will drop down in front of you. Aim for its arms. Then continue to the ship.
- TIP: The crawling enemies are also extremely vulnerable to your overpowered stomp move. Hit Right Bumper to make short work of them when they're on the ground.
- Board the ship and access the computer. Everything bursts into flames, so make a dash for the door.
- Now you'll need to take on no fewer than four enemies, two at a time. Use Stasis if you need it and try to pick your shots.
- When they're clear, you'll get a new objective. Make your way back into the Flight Lounge and take the door to the left to the tram.
- You'll enter another hallway next. Open to the two footlockers for some ammo and check the bathroom, through the door to the right, to find a large medpack. Then go through the door to take the elevator to the tram station.
- Inside the tram station is a bench, to the left, and a Store. Here you can buy new equipment and upgrade your suit. You should have a fair amount of money, so a new weapon and suit upgrade are a good idea.
- Board the tram and press the button when you're ready to end the chapter.
