About Dead Rising 2: Case West
Dead Rising 2: Case West is a downloadable epilogue to Dead Rising 2 and is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 1,200 Microsoft Points ($10.00). Like Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, the game is a standalone title and does not require a Dead Rising 2 game disc or save file in order to play.
Case West serves as an epilogue to Dead Rising 2's "Ending A," which involves Chuck's ally, Stacey Forsythe, and his daughter, Katey, escaping Fortune City on a helicopter, leaving Chuck behind to fight off T.K., who has now been turned into a zombie. Just as T.K. is about to get the upper hand on Chuck, Frank West, the protagonist from the original Dead Rising intervenes and saves his life. From there, the two infiltrate a factory run by Phenotrans, the company behind the zombie outbreak in Fortune City, in order to find evidence to clear Chuck's name and to get Frank's big story.
Players take control of Chuck in the single player mode of the game, with Frank serving as a invulnerable partner who can be equipped with weapons and outfits that Chuck finds throughout the game. In the cooperative mode, the second player takes full control of Frank.
Case West takes place entirely in the Phenotrans facility, which is home to a variety of new items, enemies and combo weapons. Since this is technically an epilogue to Dead Rising 2, players start at level 40 and have already learned techniques such as the dodge roll, the power bomb and field goal. The game is broken up into three case files, giving the whole game a length of approximately 3-4 hours.
Story
Dead Rising 2: Case West takes place immediately after the events of Dead Rising 2's "Ending A." Former motocross star Chuck Greene has discovered that the pharmaceutic company Phenotrans has been creating the Zombie outbreaks in Las Vegas and Fortune City in order to produce more of the drug "Zombrex," which is the only medicine that can be used to delay the transformation of an infected human into a zombie.
At the end of Dead Rising 2, Chuck is forced to stay behind while his daughter and only remaining ally escape the Fortune City outbreak via helicopter. Just when Chuck is about to get bitten by the zombie version of his former reality show co-star, war journalist and Dead Rising protagonist Frank West steps in to save him.
Frank tells Chuck that he has a source inside a Phenotrans facility that may be able to provide Chuck with the proof that he needs to clear his name. Together, the two infiltrate the facility and attempt to find the evidence needed to expose Phenotrans's plan to the world.
Gameplay
Like previous Dead Rising games, the focus in Dead Rising 2: Case West is to get from point A to point B while fighting your way through hundreds of flesh hungry zombies in between. Since Case West takes place at a heavily guarded Phenotrans facility though, players can also expect to see much resistance from trained armed security guards as well. In order to make fighting off the hordes of zombies easier, players are free to pick up nearly anything in the environment to use as a weapon.
Carried over from Dead Rising 2 is the abiltiy to combine specific items together to make combo weapons. Combo weapons are not only much cooler and more powerful than standard weapons, but they also grant the player more PP, which serves as the game's experience points. As players accumulate more PP, they level up and earn more inventory slots, more health bars and new combo cards.
While all of the weapon combinations in the game can be made without actually having a Combo Card, making a combination without a Combo Card will instead yield a Scratch Card. Scratch Cards are saved and can remind players what items are needed to make the combo, but the combinations formed from them will not grant the extra PP bonus, special attack or added durability that an item formed with a Combo Card would give.
