On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself "Dan Cooper" hijacked a plane, negotiated the exchange of the passengers for $200,000 and then parachuted out to freedom over the Cascade Mountains, near the Washington/Oregon border. He was long believed to be hijacker Richard McCoy, who died during a prison break in 1974 and had pulled off a similar crime, but the FBI has recently re-opened the investigation into Cooper's actual identity and whereabouts. In late March, 2008, the FBI revealed that they had found an tattered parachute buried in a recently plowed field near the center of Cooper's jump zone.
Fast Facts:
- Some agents suspect Cooper died during the jump from the plane
- Called himself Dan Cooper; "D.B." was a misspelling that stuck
- One of the two chutes with which Cooper jumped was for instructional purposes only, and was sewn shut
- The 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens covered much of the area with ash, making the search for Cooper's remains far more difficult
