DB Cooper

  • On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself "Dan Cooper" hijacked a plane, negotiated the exchange of the passengers for $200,000 and then parachuted out to freedom over the Cascade Mountains, near the Washington/Oregon border. He was long believed to be hijacker Richard McCoy, who died during a prison break in 1974 and had pulled off a similar crime, but the FBI has recently re-opened the investigation into Cooper's actual identity and whereabouts. In late March, 2008, the FBI revealed that they had found an tattered parachute buried in a recently plowed field near the center of Cooper's jump zone.
  • Fast Facts:

    1. Some agents suspect Cooper died during the jump from the plane
    2. Called himself Dan Cooper; "D.B." was a misspelling that stuck
    3. One of the two chutes with which Cooper jumped was for instructional purposes only, and was sewn shut
    4. The 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens covered much of the area with ash, making the search for Cooper's remains far more difficult
