The Daytona Twin 150s, known officially as the Gatorade Duel, consists of two 150-mile races that help determine the field for the Daytona 500. Originally, these began as two 100-mile races, then were changed to 125-mile races, and most recently were increased to two 150-mile races.
Each year on the Thursday before the main race, a pair of 150-mile races are held to determine the remaining drivers in the field. This page will provide updates of the Daytona Twin 150s.
Qualifying for the Super Bowl of NASCAR
Each year, the Daytona 500 is the first official NASCAR race of the season. It's also called the 'Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing' because of how popular the event has become.
The weekend before the race takes place, various drivers attempt to qualify with one of the fastest top two times. These two drivers are then locked into the front row for the actual race. In 2010, both Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified for the front row.
Then the rest of the field is determined with a pair of 150-mile races at Daytona International Speedway. The race is 60 laps in length and generally there is only one pit stop allowed for cars to re-fuel or make modifications to the car like changing to a fres set of tires.

History
The first three sets of 100-mile qualifying races took place in 1959. Bob Welborn won the first of these races. Four times in the history of the duals has a driver died. The last of these instances took place in 1987 with the death of Bruce Jacobi.
The legendary Dale Earnhardt struggled for years to win the actual Daytona 500, but dominated these qualifying races. He established records that still stand for winning one of these races each year for ten consecutive years, and a total of 12 of these races overall. These races do not count as official NASCAR races.
Jeff Gordon has also had a unique history with the Twin 150's. In 1993, when it was a twin 125, he won one of the qualifiers in his rookie season. In 2007, he also won one of the races but then failed a post-race inspection and was placed at the back of the field for the actual Daytona 500 later that weekend.
Eight times previously has a winner of a Gatorade Duel gone on to win the main race. The first of these was Fireball Roberts in 1962. Cale Yarborough turned the trick twice in 1977 and 1984. Bill Elliott in 1985, Bobby Allison in 1988, and Sterling Marlin in 1995, have also accomplished this feat. The last two to pull this unique double were the Earnhardts: father Dale won them both in 1998, and then his son Dale Jr. became the last to win both a Twin 150 and the main race in 2004.
