The Daytona 500 winner is determined on an annual basis, each February when the notable NASCAR race is hold at Daytona Motor Speedway. Jamie McMurray was crowned the winner when the 2010 Daytona 500 is held on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2010.
The 51st Daytona 500 took place on February 15, 2009. Matt Kenseth won the race, as he was in the lead when the race was called due to rain. In the 50th running of the race in 2008, Ryan Newman of Penske Racing came out victorious.
While eight NASCAR drivers have won the race more than once, Richard Petty holds the record of most wins, earning seven Daytona 500 wins between 1964 and 1981. Behind Petty is Cale Yarborough, who won four times, most recently in 1984. Bobby Allison, Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon have won three times each, while Bill Elliot, Sterling Marlin and Michael Waltrip have won twice. three drivers, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and Sterling Marlin, have won the race in two-consecutive years.

With a 70% chance of rain, there were worries the race would be delayed but the race started on time. However, rain forced the race to stop at lap 152.
