David Cook performed "Day Tripper" on the March 18, 2008 episode of the hit television singing competition show American Idol, as his second song by The Beatles. It was Cook's first time using a voice box. The previous week he sang "Eleanor Rigby". "Day Tripper" was originally released on the double sided single, "We Can Work It Out".
Judges' Comments
Randy said he loves seeing him every week. He keeps it interesting. It's like going to a David Cook performance. He didn't think it was his best performance but it was another solid look for him.
Paula said he's ready to go sell lots of records.
Simon said it wasn't as good as Cook himself thought it was. He looked a bit smug throughout and thought the use of a recorder during the performance was stupid. He said he's lost his element of surprise, that it was predictable.

- So let's hope for a bit of a spark from David C. Day Tripper in a Whitesnake mode (admitted by David) sounds dreadful in theory, though. And practice -- plodding '70s heaviness, the antithesis of the supple, soulful Beatles version. Really bad idea. Especially the talkbox solo. Like something Chris Daughtry would have thought of. I expect better from David. (Still like him playing guitar, though.)
- Randy likes it. Paula thought the voicebox was cool. Simon thought he looked like smug and hated the vocoder. (At last, Simon's back!)
