DLC for Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War 2 may arrive within a few weeks of the game's release. Dawn of War 2 developer Relic Entertainment is working with Microsoft to offer both free and premium DLC, including adding more maps.
Dawn of War 2's retail release includes five maps. In addition to DLC, Relic has promised that there will be a "day-zero" patch that will be available on the day of the game's release that will incorporate feedback from users and testers on the multiplayer beta that began on January 20, 2009.
DLC and Piracy
Unlike many other games, Dawn of War 2 does not use a DRM system for copyright protection. Relic Entertainment, the developers of the game, have gone on record in their criticisms of DRM practices, saying that DRM unjustly punishes the innocent for crimes commited by pirates by forcing them to deal with incovenient anti-piracy measures to play a game they've legally bought. Instead, Relic plans to use DLC as an indirect anti-piracy measure. Inspired by Valve's strategy with games like Team Fortress 2, they will offer regular and frequent DLC as a reward for people who purchased the game legally and as an incentive for people who have pirated to do so, in order to access the DLC.
"Free downloadable, regularly accessible stuff that enhances the game and then that's an incentive for the people who didn't buy the game to buy it," Relic's Johnny Ebbert explained.Shacknews: Dawn of War 2 Fighting Piracy, DRM With Free DLC (January 9, 2009)
