  • Breakout Roles

On April 18, 2005, Tennant was announced as the tenth actor to play The Doctor in the perennial BBC series, Doctor Who, to replace the short-lived Christopher Eccleston. The choice of the youthful Tennant continued a slow, decades-spanning trend in the show toward casting ever-younger actors in the lead role, which was originated in 1963 as that of an elderly man. Tennant also played the character Barty Crouch, Jr., in the November, 2005 release, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
  • Best Doctor

In something of a startling upset, a 1996 poll in Doctor Who Magazine voted Tennant as the Best Doctor, despite traditionally rabid partisanship among American fans toward the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, and among British fans toward the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee.
