David Robinson is a retired NBA basketball player, who spent his entire career with the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson was a college standout at United States Naval Academy and was selected as the Spurs first pick in the 1989 NBA Draft.
On April 6, 2009, news agencies reported that David Robinson was named to the Basketball Hall of Fame. It was his first time on the ballot. Robinson joins fellow "Dream Team" members Michael Jordan and John Stockton. Rutgers women's head coach C. Vivian Stringer and Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan also were named to the Hall of Fame. David Robinson Career
Robinson did not play basketball until his senior year in high school. By then, he had grown to 6 feet, 7 inches and earned multiple honors on the court. However, he garnered little interest from local scouts, and decided to attend the United States Naval Academy, where he became a standout player.
Granted a leave from the Naval Academy, the Spurs drafted Robinson in 1989 as their number 1 pick. With the Spurs, Robinson won two championships in 1999-2003, and was the league MVP in 1995. He was also voted to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and retired in 2003.
David Robinson's Greatest Season/Peformance
David Robinson was one of the most versatile centers the league had ever seen during his 14 year career with the San Antonio Spurs. One of Robinson’s most impressive years came during the 1993-1994 season where Robinson would capture the league’s Most Valuable Player Award averaging 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per contest in helping San Antonio to a 62-20 record; the best in the league. Unfortunately the Spurs would be eliminated the eventual champion Houston Rockets. However, Robinson would get redemption four seasons later as he and second-year forward Tim Duncan would help lead the Spurs to the title in the 1998-1999 season defeating the New York Knicks in five games.
David Robinson would close his career with a second championship in the 2002-2003 season as the Spurs defeated the New Jersey Nets in six games for the team’s second title in five seasons. David Robinson had 13 points and 17 rebounds in the series clincher. He would retire following that season in a way that few athletes have a chance to do; going out on top. David Robinson averaged a double-double throughout his career with 21 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.5 assists per game. Robinson would also retire as the Spurs’ all-time leader in points (20,790), rebounds (10,497), steals (1,388) and blocks (2,954).
