  • Career

Standing at just 5'7" Eckstein is notable one of the smallest shortstops in baseball, but gets more recognition for his exceptional play, than his diminutive stature. Esckstein was a two-time All-State baseball player at Seminole high School in Sanford, FL, where he helped lead the team to a State Championship. After High School Eckstein attended the University of Florida, where as a Walk-on to the baseball team, Eckstein became a two-time All-SEC standout. Eckstein also stood out academically, earning South East Conference Academic Honor Roll three times. Following a successful collegiate career, the Boston Red Sox drafted Eckstein in the 19th round of the 1997 amateur draft. Anaheim Angels would select Eckstein off waivers in 2000, and he would go on to become the starting shortstop on their 2002 Championship team. Eckstein would win his second World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006, earning MVP honors along the way. In the winter of 2007 Eckstein signed a 1-year $4.5 million dollar contract to play for the Blue Jays.
  • Strengths

Eckstein plays the game with an intensity that's infectious and motivating for his teammates. A fan favorite wherever he plays, Eckstein's professionalism and effort make up for what he lacks in size. He displays adequate range at shortstop, and his thows get to first despite a lack of arm strength. Eckstein is a effective leadoff hitter, doing whatever it takes to get on base or advance a runner.[1]
  • Weaknesses

Eckstein has very little pop in his bat, and tends to get impatient at the plate with runners in scoring position. He does not steal many bases, a skill desired of most leadoff men. Defensively, Eckstein will occasionally fail to throw out a runner because of his limited arm.[1]
