Prior to playing in the NFL, Clowney played college football with the Virginia Tech Hokies in the NCAA. In his four years at Virginia Tech, Clowney recorded six touchdowns, five kick-off returns and 93 total receptions for 1,373 yards. After college, Clowney was selected 157th overall in the 2007 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. He was waived by the Packers in September of 2007 and signed to their practice squad. Clowney, who has made himself into a preseason sensation, saw more playing time this season than any other in his NFL career as he was often times the Jets third WR behind Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery. The Jets rarely did make use of sets involving more than two wide receivers, but when they did Clowney often saw the field. He didn't catch many passes but he did provide the occasional lightning in the bottle with a big play. He caught 14 passes for 191 yards (13.6 yards per reception), including two touchdowns. Clowney isn't a big contributor on the Jets but he provides value in the form of blazing speed and depth at the wide receiver position.
