    Backes began his career in the United States Hockey League in 2001, playing for the Chicago Steel then the Lincoln Stars. In 2003, Backes enrolled in Minnesota State University, where he played a total of three seasons. That same year he was drafted 62nd overall in the NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues. In 2006, Backes joined the Peoria Rivermen, a Blues' American Hockey League affiliate. Also in 2006, Backes made his NHL debut with the Blues, splitting the season between the NHL and the AHL. He earned a full roster spot with the Blues during the 2007-08 season, playing 72 regular season games.
