On January 30, 2009, YouTube user "booba1234" posted a 2-minute video, titled David After Dentist, of his 7-year old son, David DeVore Jr. The footage was taken shortly after the boy had undergone oral dental surgery on May of 2008. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txqiwrbYGrs David had received treatment for hyperdontia, an oral condition where an individual has an extra tooth. He was put under anesthesia for the procedure and was still groggy and disoriented after leaving the office. David’s father, David DeVore Sr., videotaped the event since it was his son’s first operation, and his mother, Tessie, could not be present.http://davidafterdentist.com/how-it-happened/
Word spread about the video, and David DeVore Sr. soon found himself overwhelmed with requests to see it. DeVore decided to post the video to YouTube. Within a few days of him uploading the video, it had been viewed over 3 million times.
David After Dentist has had over 55 million views and a number of remixes and parodies, created by fans. YouTube offered partnership to the DeVore family as part of their revenue-sharing program in 2009. http://newteevee.com/2009/02/20/youtube-extends-partner-program-to-viral-videomakers/ The DeVores also profit from selling “David After Dentist” t-shirts. http://davidafterdentist.com/blog/
David DeVore has been criticized for exploiting his son. Some have said he prompted the child to behave in that manner, coached him through the taping and took advantage of his inebriated state. DeVore has denied any such allegations and insists that he only recorded his son’s odd behavior. http://davidafterdentist.com/how-it-happened/
According to Business Insider, the DeVore family has received approximately $150,000 from YouTube, licensing deals and product sales directly related to the David After Dentist video. Some of the money has been donated to their church and to Operation Smile, which is an organization that helps children with dental problems such as cleft lips.http://www.businessinsider.com/where-are-they-now-david-after-dentist-family-rolling-in-150000-2010-6
