In 1998, Roberts was traded to the Cleveland Indians. On August 7, 1999, he made his MLB debut with the Cleveland Indians. Roberts is widely recognized for his ninth-inning steal in the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the Red Sox on the verge of elimination from the post season, Roberts stole second base, putting him in scoring position for the eventual tying run. The play would lead to a run scoring single and eventually spark the Red Sox to a series victory and eventually the World Series title.
