Da’Sean Butler is a 6’7 230 pound forward for the West Virginia Mountaineers. Hailing from Newark, New Jersey he played his high school basketball at Bloomfield Tech. Butler was not intimidated by Big East competition from the beginning. As a freshman he came off the bench averaging over 23 minutes and 10 points per game. Butler earned a starting spot his sophomore year and has continued to expand his role at West Virginia every season.
In 2009 Butler was invited to the USA Basketball Men’s World University Games. He made the team and played well. Team USA won bronze in the games, losing to Russia in the Semifinals. They did beat eventual champion Serbia in the preliminary rounds. Butler held his own in the games averaging only 17 minutes per game; he scored 8.6 points and had 4 rebounds per game. The team spread out the minutes evenly so that only one player averaged over 20. Butler did hit 54% of his three pointers in the games which was 4th best in the tournament.
Scouts will be quick to point out that Butler does not have the athleticism or explosiveness to make him a star in the NBA. However he does have solid size and length and a great work ethic. 2010 NCAA Tournament
Butler has not disappointed his fans with impressive performances in the Mountaineers run to the Final Four.
In the first round against Morgan St. he scored 9 points in only 28 minutes as West Virginia cruised to victory. In the second round against Missouri, they game was tight until the end and Butler came up big when his team needed him, scoring 28 points. West Virginia weathered a tough test against a hot Washington team. Butler scored 14 in that contest.
Butler was great against #1 Seed Kentucky. He scored 18 points and added 4 timely 3-Pointers. The West Virginia defense smothered the Wildcats and the Mountaineers won by a final of 73-66 to advance to the Final Four.
Butler's collegiate career came to a disasterous close in the Final Four game against Duke. The Mountaineers were struggling to keep pace with the Blue Devils when an awkward landing by Butler sent him writhing on the court grabbing his knee. Butler tore his ACL and sprained his MCL. West Virginia simply could not keep pace after losing their star. They were blown out by the Blue Devils 78-57. Butler will require surgery to repair the knee.
2010 Big East Tournament
BUTLER DOES IT AGAIN, burying a floater with 4 seconds left to beat Georgetown and give West Virginia their first ever Big East Championship. He wins the tournaments most valuable player. Watch out for this clutch performer in the NCAA Tourney.
Da'Sean Butler hit a 3 Pointer at the buzzer to help West Virginia survive and advance against Cincinnati. In a day that saw many of the Big East Tournament favorites fall to upsets, Butler wasn't going to let that happen to his Mountaineers. West Virginia takes on Notre Dame next. The Irish upset Pittsburgh to advance.
Da'Sean Butler 2009-10 Season
Butler’s senior season has seen him emerge as the Mountaineers primary scoring option. He continues to average over 35 minutes per game with 17.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. Butler has worked on his distribution skills, doubling his assists per game and cutting down on his turnovers. His assist to turnover ratio is 1.94. Headed into the Big East Tournament, Butler has led his West Virginia team to a 24 win, 6 loss season so far overall and 13-5 in the Big East. Butler’s Junior season was marked with an increased scoring workload. He averaged over 33 minutes per game and 17.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. He turned the ball over at high clip, 2.3 per game resulting in a .74 assist to turnover ratio. This is an area that Butler will have to improve upon to help his draft status. Da'Sean Bulter 2007-08 Season
In Butler’s Sophomore season he emerged as a full time starter. He averaged over 30 minutes per game and 12.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. Another solid regular season for the Mountaineers earned them an NCAA Tournament bid. They beat Arizona in the first round and then upset the #2 seeded Duke Blue Devils to earn a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. They were beaten in overtime by Xavier to end their tournament run. Da'Sean Bulter 2006-07 Season
In Butler’s Freshman year he made a big contribution off the bench to help ease the pain of a great graduating class at West Virginia. Butler averaged over 20 minutes per game and 10.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1 assist. The team missed out on the NCAA tournament but did earn an invite to the NIT. The Mountaineers beat Clemson in the final to win the NIT Championship.
