The Darwin Awards are named after evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin. Since 1995 the tongue-in-cheek accolades have been bestowed upon people who have acted upon extremely poor judgment which results in their demise. In this way nominees have excluded themselves form the gene pool and in so doing contribute to the continuation of humanity.The project was created by Wendy Northcutt who first began collecting the stories in 1993.
