Hockey Career
After just one season with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League, Helm was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2005 NHL Draft. He continued with the Tigers for two additional seasons, earning WHL All-Star honors, before he was called up to play for the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, in 2007. That stay was short as well as he finished the season with the Wings and helped the team win the Stanley Cup.http://www.legendsofhockey.net/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=21750
Helm returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins to start the 2008-09 season and played 55 games with the affiliate that year. He did however join the Red Wings late in the year for 16 games in the regular season and 23 games in the NHL Playoffs.http://www.legendsofhockey.net/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=21750
Herm 2 Hockeytown Connection
In the 2009-10 season, Red Wings bloggers joined together to raise money for one devout Red Wings fan to come to Detroit to see the team play live for the first time. Taking online donations, the bloggers were able to bring Guilherme Calciolari, better known as Herm, to Detroit to see his first live game, meet another hockey fan for the first time and visit with his favorite player, Darren Helm. Herm was the talk of the town during the week, appearing on several news broadcasts and receiving a signed game-used stick from Helm. "Herm 2 Hockeytown" was such a success, including raising over $5,300 for Children's Hospital of Michigan, the bloggers plan to make it an annual tradition.http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=523262
