Dark Void is a third-person shooter mixed with platform and flight simulation elements.
With developer Airtight Studios on board for publisher Capcom, Dark Void was released in North America on January 19th, 2010, and in Europe on January 22nd, 2010.
Touted as an intriguing game in principle with its jet pack gameplay, the game has received generally negative or neutral reviews from video game websites such as IGN and GameZone.http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/106/1061967p1.html
Gameplay
The protagonist of Dark Void is a pilot named William Augustus Grey, who finds himself in an alternate dimension called the Void after flying into the Bermuda Triangle. He encounters a small, acrobatic race of cyborgs called Watchers.
Unlike a standard side-scrolling platformer, jumping onto a cliff face in Dark Void moves the camera below the player for a vertical climb. Will clings to outcroppings with one hand and fires on enemies with the other.
The player has access to a rocket pack that can be used to hover above enemies or fly great distances. With it, he can hijack enemy aircraft and participate in midair dogfights.
Reception
Though Dark Void was poised to be a breakout popular game for the Capcom corporation, it was met largely with disappointment from gaming critics.
Commonly cited issues were an improbable and hard to follow storyline, lackluster controls, and a concept of jet pack flying and "skyjacking" that sounded more interesting and engaging than it really was, ending up to be a consistently repetitive affair.
IGN scored the game with a 5.0 out of 10, with the assertion that "Dark Void" is one of those games you'll play, beat, and forget ever existed."http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/106/1061967p1.html
Game Informer lended "Dark Void" its most generous public score, giving it a 7 out of 10.http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-dark-void/60947
GameTrailers scored "Dark Void" a mediocre 6.8 out of 10.http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-dark-void/60947
GameZone's Louis Bedigian scored both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions with a poor 6/10, noting that "The generic Gears of War-style shooting is forgivable. But the countless technical problems all but destroy a game that had the potential to be something truly special. Dark Void can be summed up in just six words: so much potential, so much disappointment."http://xbox360.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r34011.htm
Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 3 out of 5, extolling the unique jet pack but noting that the game "winds up being less than the sum of its parts,"; also, that Dark Void is "not something you need to have in your collection."http://www.hardcoregamer.com/index.php?option=com_magazine&id_rubrique=1&type=article&id_article=491
Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw of Zero Punctuation stated that Dark Void was the game that had let him down the most during his review career . This was not solely because the game itself was poor, but rather due to its ambition. In stretches, it was noted as being "very engrossing and fun", but "in the end felt both too short and too unfinished, as if the developers had run out of money or time."http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/1433-Dark-Void
