Dark Side Of The Rainbow

  • "Dark Side of the Rainbow" is a phenomena that occurs when a person listens to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon while watching The Wizard of Oz. There are many noticeable correlations between the lyrics of the music and the events in the film. For example, the lyrics of a song reference a "lunatic" during the scene introducing the Scarecrow.
  • Notable Synchronizations

For the synchronization to work properly you must press "play" on the CD (or drop the needle on the record) as the MGM lion roars the third time.

    • The song "Breathe" starts exactly when the producer credit appears.
    • The lyric "balanced on the biggest wave" is heard as Dorothy balances on a fence.
    • The song "Money" begins just as the film changes to color. At the time, making a film in color was fairly costly.
    • The first side of the album is exactly as long as the black-and-white portion of the film.
    • The Scarecrow is dancing on the yellow brick road in line with the lyric "the lunatic is on the path."
    • The Tin Man brings down his axe in line with the lyric "all you destroy."
    • A heartbeat is heard as Dorothy pounds on the Tin Man's chest.
    • The Tin Man appears to be telling Dorothy and the Scarecrow that "There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark."
  • Reaction by Pink Floyd

"I've heard of the myth, and I've actually ... seen how it works... It's very impressive... there are two elements to that: one is- who on earth spent that much time working with that track and that movie?... You could probably try it with other records and other films." - Nick Mason, Pink Floyd's drummer.Artisan News Service: Artisan News

"Some guy with too much time on his hands had this idea of combining Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon." - David Gilmour, Pink Floyd's guitarist.Gilmour: David Gilmour audio file

"I tried it for the first time about two years ago... I was very disappointed. The only thing I noticed was that the line 'balanced on the biggest wave' came up when Dorothy was kind of tightrope walking along a fence... if you play any record with the sound turned down on the TV, you will find things that work." Alan Parsons, studio engineer for Pink Floyd.Rolling Stone Magazine: Alan Parsons Interview

  • Synchronicity: The Explanation

Early 20th century philosopher Carl Jung's theory of synchronicity would explain the "Dark Side of the Rainbow" phenomena. Synchronicity suggests that subconsciously all human minds and emotions work the same way. Simply stated, this explains that movies, albums, TV shows, and other forms of media will tend to have more fast-paced parts at certain parts and more calm parts at certain places. It's only natural that two forms of media would eventually seem to match up, as is the case with Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz.
