  Dark Shadows didn't start off as a soap opera with supernatural elements, but once the ghosts and, most notably, the vampire Barnabas Collins were introduced, the show pulled out all the stops. The unabashed combination of two melodramatic staples -- gothic horror and the soap opera -- proved to be one that still resonates with fans.
