Gameplay

The game is similar to God of War, in which there are light and heavy attacks as well as magic. Dante's primary weapon is a scythe, which he steals from Death itself. He also has magical powers such as a Holy Cross (given to him by Beatrice before her death) which fires a burst of light that destroys anything in its path. He is also able to condemn or absolve his foes and many damned shades throughout the journey, gaining righteous or unholy points with each absolution or condemnation. The resulting effect from the more righteousness points attained, the more powerful Holy Cross attacks become and the more unholy points are achieved, the more powerful Dante's scythe becomes. The game also features sections in which Dante has to swing on ropes, climb walls, etc…During his adventures; Dante can find hidden Biblical items. Equipping them will improve some of his abilities.

Plot

Dante's Inferno is loosely based on the first part of Dante's Divine Comedy. The player controls Dante, a veteran of the Crusades, who chases his beloved Beatrice and attempts to free her soul from Lucifer. As his pursuit takes him through the 9 Circles of the Inferno to Beatrice, he will battle monsters, face his sins and his war crimes. Many characters in this game appear nowhere in the Comedy. The Circles of the Inferno, Dante’s has to travel through are related to his sins. For example: when he enters the second circle (Lust) Lucifer, reveals the sin Dante’s committed to Bratrice. He broke his vows while he was in Acre. Even if Dante is a faithful person, he finds out that he committed all the sins, or was involved in them one way or another. During the game, he has to fight them all.
