Daniel Sedin

National Hockey League player Daniel Sedin plays left wing on the Vancouver Canucks' first line. Daniel Sedin's twin brother Henrik Sedin usually plays center on the same line as Daniel Sedin and the two have proved themselves to be a highly effective scoring team throughout their professional careers. Although both brothers have won the Cyrus H. McLean Trophy as the Canucks' top scorer, it is more often Henrik Sedin in the role of play maker, passing the puck to Daniel Sedin.

Born in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, the Sedin brothers come from a small town with a rich hockey history. Ornskoldsvik is the home of the Modo Hockey Club, any many of Sweden's most famous hockey plays have been born or played in they city, including Peter Forsberg, Markus Näslund, Niklas Sundström, Victor Hedman, and Thomas Gradin. Daniel grew up playing for Modo until he joined the Canucks in the NHL.

Hockey Career

The Sedin twins began their professional hockey careers playing for the Modo team of the Swedish Elite League. After his second season with Modo, Daniel finished first overall in scoring and was ranked the second draft pick for the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Henrik Sedin was right behind his brother as the number three draft pick.

Under normal draft circumstances, the Sedin twins would not have gone to the same NHL team, but the Vancouver Canucks' general manager, Brian Burke traded draft positions so that the Canucks could draft both twins. The twins played one more season in Sweden before moving to Canada to become full time members of the Vancouver lineup for the 2000-2001 season. During his rookie season, Daniel Sedin tied for second place in rookie scoring with 20 goals.

Both the Sedins continued to steadily improve over the next few seasons, then returned to play in Sweden during the 2004-2005 lockout.

International Career

Daniel represented his home country of Sweden in numerous international competitions, including the World Junior Championships in 1999 and 2001 and the World Championships the same years, at which Sweden took bronze both times. Sedin competed for Sweden at the World Championships again in 2005 and then won a gold medal along with Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics. He also played for Sweden in the 2010 Olympics, but they failed to medal.
