Daniel Carcillo was drafted 73rd overall in the third round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before playing a single game with Pittsburgh, he was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes, in a trade involving Georges Laraque. Daniel Carcillo is considered "a tough guy," in 129 games with the Coyotes between 2006 and 2009, Carcillo accumulated 572 penalty minutes, leading the league in the category during the 2007-2008 season.
