Early Life
Akaka received both a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in education from the University of Hawaii. He went on to work as a teacher and principal. -
Political Career
In 1976, Akaka began a long tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he remained until 1990. That year, Akaka replaced Senator Spark Matsunaga, who had died in office. -
