Dancing with the Stars Week 6
- 4/13 Welcome! Tonight the contestants will either dance the jive or the rumba. Last week, David Alan Grier and his partner Kym Johnson were eliminated.
- Tonights marks the halfway point in the competition, only 5 of the men and 3 of the women remain.
- First up was Ty Murray dancing the jive with his partner Chelsie Hightower. They decided to heed to judges advice from last week and work on his stiffness. Chelsie brought in a mini-trampoline to show Ty how he needed to move on the floor.
- YouTube Video: Ty and Chelsie Dance The Jive (Time: 7:23)
- Len Goodman said that Ty's charming, but seems bewildered while dancing. He said the dance took a long while to get started, but even once Ty got started it wasn't very good.
- Bruno complimented Ty on the line dance part of the routine but that he attacked the jive like a wild animal, but that none of them were right.
- Carrie Ann thought it was an exciting jive, but that this dance wasn't suited for Ty and it was tough to watch.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 6
- Len: 6
- Bruno: 6
- Total: 18
- Next up tonight is Shawn Johnson and her partner Mark Ballas dancing the rumba. She struggled with being romantic with Mark, and points out that she's only 17 and the other contestants have more experience with "this stuff."
- YouTube Video: Shawn and Mark Rumba (Time: 6:40)
- The pair received a standing ovation from the audience.
- Bruno said it was so beautifully pure it was almost angelic. He wants Shawn to push a little bit more on the hip action.
- Carrie Ann pointed out that it is harder for Shawn to connect to the romantic dances, and she could see the discomfort in Shawn's eyes.
- Len said the dance was just right, not too much fire and yet it wasn't too cold.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 8
- Len: 9
- Bruno: 9
- Total: 26
- Lawrence Taylor is set to dance the jive with his partner Edyta Sliwinska. In practice, he had a hard time remembering the steps and where to move on the floor. Warren Sapp joined them in the practice room and gave Lawrence a bit of a pep talk to get things moving in the right direction.
- YouTube Video: Lawrence and Edtya Jive (Time: 6:28)
- Carrie Ann said that Lawrence "brought his groove back" and that it was so enjoyable to watch.
- Len liked that they kept the moves basic and showed lots of personality.
- Bruno said they should keep Warren with them all the time. Bruno also said that he counted out the whole dance and they kept perfect timing throughout the dance and it was their best dance yet.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 7
- Len: 7
- Bruno: 8
- Total: 22
- Melissa Rycroft danced the rumba with her partner Tony Dovolani. She wanted to work hard portraying the character of the rumba, especially after not being able to do well in the pasa doble last week.
- YouTube Video: Melissa & Tony Rumba (Time: 6:47)
- Len said it was clean and precise with very interesting choreography, but it could have been a bit more "earthy."
- Bruno added that Melissa's body can assume the most incredible shapes, he wants to see her as a man-eater.
- Carrie Ann was impressed by the emotional quality Melissa showed, but warned Melissa to not be afraid to move her hips.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 9
- Len: 9
- Bruno: 9
- Total: 27
- Lil Kim danced the jive with her partner Derek Hough. In practice Kim struggled to find one character to play.
- YouTube Video: Lil Kim & Derek Jive (Time: 6:59)
- The pair received a standing ovation, including one from actress and rapper Queen Latifah.
- Bruno hollered "I'm guilty of love in the first degree! You rocked!"
- Carrie Ann stood up and screamed "that was amazing! It was just mind-blowing!"
- Len said it was fun and had energy, but felt that Derek was so busy trying to tell the story of the jailhouse rock (the song they danced to) that not enough dance steps from the jive were included. He added that it was good, just not a jive.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 10
- Len: 8
- Bruno: 10
- Total: 28
- Next up is Steve-O and his partner Lacey Schwimmer performing the rumba. He's looking forward to getting out on the floor and showing the audience "all the love he's got." At the same time, he's very uncomfortable even talking about showing passion with Lacey because he looks at her like she's a younger sister.
- YouTube Video: Steve-O & Lacey Rumba (Time: 7:10)
- Carrie Ann held her head down, saying there was something oddly mesmerizing watching them dance. She feels they need to work on Steve-O's grace, but that it was much better than last week.
- Len said that you can't confuse movement with dancing, there was hip action, footwork and it was no good.
- Bruno said "thank God for racey Lacey" and that Steve-O has the charm of a puppy, but the dancing was bad.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 7
- Len: 4
- Bruno: 5
- Total: 16
- Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke are next up. They'll dance the jive, and Cheryl has to teach not to not be sexy, but to let loose and have fun with the dance.
- YouTube Video: Gilles & Cheryl Jive (Time: 6:40)
- The received a standing ovation from the audience.
- Len said there were a lot of good qualities from the jive, but pointed out that Gilles did have a misstep. Len added that it was the same as last week, just too "grungy."
- Bruno said it was fast and furious, and that Gilles puts 110% into everything he does.
- Carrie Ann added that not only can he do sexy, but he can do "showy" too. She mentioned there was something weird about his arm movements tonight.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 9
- Len: 8
- Bruno: 9
- Total: 26
- Chuck Wicks and his partner/girlfriend Julianne Hough were the last to compete tonight. They performed the rumba. During practice, Chuck struggled with Julianne's teaching methods, even called her "mean." She decided they needed some time off to reconnect as a couple, so she brought him back to the place they shared their first date together, the Santa Monica Pier.
- YouTube Video: Chuck & Juliane Rumba (Time: 6:36)
- The pair received the last standing ovation of the evening.
- Bruno said "I want some more of that please!" Julianna hollered "me too!" Bruno went on to say that it wasn't technically perfect, it was a step in the right direction.
- Carrie Ann's heart is pumping and said it was the most passionate and sexy number of the night.
- Len felt it was more "bedroom than ballroom." Len doesn't understand Chuck because sometimes she has great lines, other times they are horrible. Sometimes he dances well, other times it's mechanical.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann Inaba: 8
- Len: 7
- Bruno: 8
- Total: 23
