Dancing with the Stars Season Premiere
- 3/09 Welcome to season 8 of Dancing with the Stars. Starting off we find out that there are only 11 original dancers who signed up at the start. Nancy O'Dell and Jewel had to drop out due to injuries. They will announce who takes their place later on in the show.
- First up are Lil Kim and Derek. She admits that the first time she ever watched the show was from prison, where she watched it faithfully. In training, Derek is excited to see her "swagger" that she has because of her background in hip-hop. Lil Kim is dedicating this first dance to all the girls in the federal detention center. They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha to a cover of the song "Nasty" by Janet Jackson.
- Len Goodman said that overall the first dance was first class. He thinks she needs to work on her posture a bit for next week's quickstep, but feels she did a good job.
- Bruno said "Lil Kim, nasty but tasty! You can do wonders with that tushie!"
- Carrie Ann thinks Lil Kim has great potential and tells her to not let the style of dance bother her, to just let it out.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 7
- Bruno: 7
- Len: 7
- Total: 21
- Next up are Belinda Carlisle and her professional partner Jonathan Roberts. Their first dance will be the Waltz. She's worried about the spinning and is having a problem with being dizzy. Jonathan is concerned about her ability to stay in the show if she isn't able to "rotate". They are dancing to a cover of "What the World Needs Now" popularized by Jackie DeShannon.
- Bruno says that on the first spin Belinda looked like "Julie Andrews, most regal. Then you turned into Cloris Leachman, heavy, heavy. You have to extend those lines. I know it's the first week but you have a long way to go."
- Carrie Ann said that it wasn't great, but it certainly wasn't Cloris Leachman. She tells Belinda to trust in Jonathan, let him lead her.
- Len thought overall there was some grace and elegance, although some moves were a bit awkward. He feels she did a good job on a very difficult dance.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Bruno: 5
- Len: 6
- Total: 17
- Third to hit the dance floor are Lawrence Taylor with professional dancer Edyta Sliwinska. He seems a bit concerned about wearing the dance shoes and keeping with the other football players that have done well on the show. Taylor is also afraid to go out on the floor and look like a food. They will dance the Cha Cha Cha to a cover of the song "Twenty-Five Miles."
- Carrie Ann asks if Taylor feels he's lived up to the legends of the dance floor. After Taylor replies "not yet," Carrie Ann agrees with him. She suggests that he's dancing a little to small and wants to see him get "down and dirty next week."
- Len said that Taylor has a naturalness about him and he enjoyed watching him.
- Bruno thinks Taylor has something in it, but they haven't seen it. Taylor needs to attack it, come out and perform.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Len: 5
- Bruno: 5
- Total: 16
- Time for Steve-O and professional dancer Lacey Schwimmer to hit the floor. Lacey is all giggles the moment he rides his bicycle into the dance studio. Steve-O wants everyone to know that even though he's now clean and sober after a stint in rehab, he still hasn't lost his "mojo." His says that one of his disadvantages is that he is "very Caucasian and can't keep a beat." They are dancing the Waltz to a musical number.
- They received a standing ovation!
- Len admires Steve-O came out fully committed and didn't "jackass" around. "Technically there was a lot going on that wasn't quite the ticket, but I expected much, much worse. Well done."
- Bruno said "Steve-O my God, this was a big pile of slapstick but, it did make me laugh and it was entertaining. Ok, the technique wasn't very good, but you did come out here and perform. Fun."
- Carrie Ann says that she has mixed emotions, "I was oddly mesmerized by the beauty, but the weirdness and the awkwardness. But wow, I loved the beginning and I loved the end. The middle needs a little work on the technique. You have an incredible determination that is inspiring to watch and see your entire mojo in such a great way."
- While waiting for their scores, Steve-O said he accomplished his goal, he put a "foot in the waltz's butt".
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Len: 5
- Bruno: 6
- Total: 17
- Gilles Marini will dance with Cheryl Burke. In practice, she laughs at him because he seems a bit "feminine." She's trying to make him sexy to help him develop a fan base.
- They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha to a cover of "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer.
- They also receive a standing ovation.
- Carrie Ann has the giggles, then hollers out a big "woohoo!" She likes his lines, his bravado. "Fantastic!"
- Bruno says "clothes on or clothes off, you certainly know how to strut your stuff. It was sharp, it was sexy."
- Len said it was a great mix of choreography. "Absolutely fabulous."
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 8
- Len: 8
- Bruno: 8
- Total: 24
- It's the first "real live couple" on the show! Time for pro Julianne Hough and her boyfriend Chuck Wicks to take the floor. They seemed to struggle a bit in practice, as Chuck keeps wanting to take over and tell her what do to. She feels that he's not taking her seriously. They are dancing the Waltz to a cover of the song "Are You Lonesome Tonight" made popular by Elvis Presley.
- Bruno said that Chuck was looking good at times, but was worried that he would strangle her. He just has to calm down a bit and take it easy.
- Len agrees with Bruno, but adds that Chuck has good footwork and his posture is a little bizarre.
- Carrie Ann thinks he is one of the most graceful men on the dance floor. Carrie Ann did mention that Julianne's foot did come off the floor and reminded the couple of the lift rules.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Len: 7
- Bruno: 7
- Total: 20
- Jewel is disappointed that she won't be able to dance, but will stay to support her husband Ty Murray. She'll also sing during one of the shows.
- Nancy O'Dell is disappointed to have gotten injured and admits to being a bit jealous that someone else will dance with Tony. She'll go in for surgery on her knee next week and will then have a 6-8 week recovery time.
- It's official! One of the replacements is Holly Madison! She'll be dancing with Dmitry Chaplin, a new professional. All the other dancers got 4 weeks to prepare, but they only get one.
- They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha to a cover of "Just Dance" by Lady GaGa.
- Len thought it wasn't bad. He's sure next week will be better with their quickstep as they will have a little bit longer to practice.
- Carrie Ann asks Holly to not get discouraged, that seeing her next week will be much more exciting as Holly will have developed more strength.
- Bruno mentions that Holly is easy on the eye. "There is hope my darling, there is hope. Keep working hard." Bruno also points out that she lost the timing many times.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Len: 6
- Bruno: 6
- Total: 18
- The other replacement has been announced! It's Melissa Rycroft from The Bachelor!
- But wait, it's time for Ty Murray to hit the floor with Chelsie Hightower, a new professional. Upon them meeting for the first time, Ty expresses concern about being out of his element. In practice, he seems a bit awkward, but loves the part where he has to "just stand."
- They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha to "Train in Vain" by the Clash.
- Bruno said "It looked more like an Army drill than a Cha Cha Cha." (Meanwhile, Carrie Ann has her head down on the judges table and won't look up.) "There is always next week."
- Len says that "part of the charm of the show is to see people come out in something that is far beyond their comfort level come out and try, and you did come out and try."
- Carrie Ann says "you're one cute cowboy. I really love the way you attack that. I like that you were able to let go and have fun, it makes it contagious to watch."
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 5
- Len: 4
- Bruno: 5
- Total: 14
- Next up is the youngest competitor ever on the show, Shawn Johnson. She's partnered up with Mark Ballas Jr.. He wants her to forget everything she knows about gymnastics. She's having a hard time being serious and connection to the emotion of the dance. In gymnastics, Shawn was taught never to show emotion.
- They are dancing the Waltz to a cover of the song "It Is You I Have Loved All Along" made popular by Danny Glover.
- They receive a standing ovation.
- Carrie Ann is truly moved "for a little one". You have the power to move people."
- Bruno says Shawn is "surprisingly refined for somebody so young to portray that sense of elegance." He warned her to beware of her "gymnastic arms," but not to worry as its a "tiny little thing."
- Len agrees with Bruno, saying that Shawn needs a little more fluidity in her arms, but overall it was "fantastic".
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 8
- Len: 8
- Bruno: 7
- Total: 23
- Time for Steve Wozniak and Karina Smirnoff. He fears that he won't be able to dance. He's using his critical thinking skills to analyze everything. He's out to prove that "nerds can dance."
- They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha to a cover of "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman Turner Overdrive.
- Yet another standing ovation!
- Len says the good news is that the dance held his attention throughout. You went for the fun element, but overall it was a disaster.
- Bruno doesn't know it was "hilarious or delirious." "It was like watching a teletubbie going mad."
- Carrie Ann thinks that Steve is what this competition is all about. "You're doing something new, you're going out on a limb and it's heartwarming."
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 5
- Len: 4
- Bruno: 4
- Total: 13
- Next up is comedian David Alan Grier with professional dancer Kym Johnson. He's dancing "for the free dance shoes and sexual favors." He refuses to hug Kym when they first met. She's worried because she isn't getting his "jokes." After a bit of practice, she's realizes that he's the real deal and is willing to practice hard to stay in the competition.
- They are dancing the Waltz to "You Light Up My Life" made popular by Debby Boone.
- Bruno says that David has good lines sometimes, but their hold is not right. Bruno also asks David to keep to one character in each dance.
- Carrie Ann asks him to be careful with his face, because it distracts them from the dance.
- Len feels there was far more good in that performance than bad, but that David's "bottom" sticks out. After a few pointers on David's "bottom" problem, Len says that overall the performance was very commendable.
- Carrie Ann interrupts and reminds the couple to keep their feet on the ground, as there was an illegal "drag."
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Len: 7
- Bruno: 6
- Total: 19
- Time for Denise Richards and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She's really excited that he is her partner. She's worried that her dancing won't be up to par, and feels stupid for not being able to keep up. After a little pep-talk, her spirits are lifted and ready for a fresh start.
- They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha to a cover of the Poison song "Nothing But a Good Time."
- Carrie Ann brings up that Denise looks terrified, but is worried because she is showing great potential.
- Len agrees and adds that she dances a little loose.
- Bruno says that she has it, but she doesn't know what to do with up. He wants Denise to dig in deep and come out and deliver.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 6
- Len: 6
- Bruno: 6
- Total: 18
- Wow, that was a fast two hours! Time for the last dance of the night. They show a short clip of Jason Mesnick dumping Melissa Rycroft on The Bachelor. At the end of the clip, the host Tom Bergeron said "two words Jason, people skills." (Wow!) But on to happier times now. She joined the cast on Saturday and only had 2 days to practice, the least out of any contestant. Melissa is partnered with Tony Dovolani.
- They are dancing the Waltz to "Moon River."
- Melissa is in tears as they receive a standing ovation.
- Len says that when one door shuts, another one opens. It's obvious that you've danced before and I think you've done ballet. You've got to learn to go off on your heel.
- Bruno tells her "I don't know that Bachelor guy, but he's a looser." "You are a revelation! It was like watching a beautiful bird about to take flight."
- Carrie Ann believes she did a wonderful job. "You have beautiful lines and a lot of natural - you're just a beautiful dancer." Carrie Ann warns Melissa to pull her emotions together and connect with the dance.
- Scores:
- Carrie Ann: 8
- Len: 7
- Bruno: 8
- Total: 23
