The 2009 cast for Dancing with the Stars was announced throughout a three hour block of ABC programing on February 8, 2009. It was used as a part of the counter-programing campaign to steer viewers away from the Grammys on CBS. Highlights of the season include husband and wife competitors, Jewel and Ty Murray, computer mogul Steve Woznia and football player (also, boyfriend to Dancing star Julianne Hough) Chuck Wicks.
On March 5, 2009, both Jewel and Nancy O'Dell withdrew from competition because of injuries sustained while training. Melissa Rycroft and Holly Madison were named as their replacements soon after the announcement.
