Dan Fogelberg was a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Many of his lyrics are based on real life encounters and feelings Fogelburg has faced in his life.
"Same Old Lang Syne" was based on an encounter with his ex girlfriend Jill Anderson. In "Leader Of The Band", he remembers his childhood and coming of age and thanks his father Lawrence for his kindness and "stories of the road" that influenced him to pursue a music career. On his official website, Fogelberg wrote that he was "gratified" that he was able to share it with his father, who was "interviewed many times by the national press because of it."
