Damnation is a steampunk game set in an alternate version of the United States where the Civil War lasted for decades and the Union and Confederacy still exist. A successful arms dealer turned dictatorial figurehead has his eye's set on world domination and Hamilton Rourke, a disgraced soldier turned rebel, is out to stop him.

The game is characterized by fast-paced action and frenetic combat. There is no sticky cover system, since the developers want players to keep on their toes, taking out enemies and checking out the expansive environment. The game world stretches both horizontally and vertically, with huge draw distances. Players race at high speeds along dizzying cliffs, scale towers and buildings, and zoom across the map on ziplines.

Damnation features a multiplayer co-op mode that lets players enjoy the single-player campaign together. The second player takes on the role of the various NPCs who help Rourke throughout the game.
