Mini-Biography
A native of the Dominican Republic, Marte originally signed with the Seattle Mariners as an amateur free agent in 1992. After seven years as a pitching prospect in the Mariners farm system, Marte made his major league debut on June 30, 1999. The following season Marte signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees, but never pitched for the team. The Yankees traded him to the Pirates in exchange for Enrique Wilson. The Pirates sent Marte to the Chicago White Sox along with Edwin Yan, for Matt Guerrier in 2005. The White Sox would send Marte back to Pittsburgh three seasons later, in exchange for Rob Mackowiak.
Strengths:
Marte is a hard throwing left-hander who strikes out a lot of batters, and is very tough on lefties[1].
Weaknesses:
Marte struggles to hold runners, and is not as effective against right-handed batters[1].
