The Dalmatian is a mid-sized, muscular dog known for its distinct spotted-coat and its endurance, strength and independent personality. The origin of the Dalmatian is unclear. Although many have speculated that they originated from Dalmatia, this breed of canine is seen in early times on tombs following behind Egyptian chariots. This paints a very likely picture of the Dalmatian, or it's ancestors since they are the only coach dog.http://www.akc.org/breeds/dalmatian/history.cfm
Dalmatian Temperament
Dalmatians are highly intelligent and bright dogs. They respond best to gentle, with positive training. Active, energetic and playful, they are people-oriented and adjust well to large families and children. Their strong builds, outgoing personalities and great amount of endurance make the need for a lot of exercise. The Dalmatian Club of America: [1]
They are very social and love human companionship. Dalmatians are a sensitive canine. They will not do well when left alone often or for long periods of time. This can cause them to be lonely, depressed and destructive. For these reasons, owners should have adequate time and energy to devote to their pet. They generally do well with other existing pets, but can be unwelcoming of strange animals. With proper training, dalmatians can make excellent watch dogs. They tend to only bark when necessary.
Dalmatian Health Problems
Dalmatians have a genetic disposition to deafness. It is estimated that one in four dalmatians are either partially or completely deaf. Puppies should receive hearing tests starting as early as five weeks old. The Dalmatian Club of Canada: [1] Puppies that are completely deaf should be spayed or neutered, since this is a genetic disorder.
Urinary problems can occur in this breed, because of their high uric acid levels. This can cause kidney stones and blockages in the urinary track. Dalmatians are also prone to skin allergies.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/dalmatian.htm
The general care of Dalmatians should include a weekly brushing of the coat, but daily once the dog is shedding. Baths should only be given when ever necessary with a mild soap. Dalmatians should be kept indoors or in shelter during extreme weather conditions. They are prone to ticks and fleas and other skin problems, such as fungus.http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/breeds/1100093/
